Tech-013: The Start of My DevOps Journey

After six years at Navigator, I stepped into my first official role as a DevOps engineer. This was the start of a whole new chapter — and where things really started to get interesting.

This was a fully remote role; I worked under the head of infrastructure and IT; Joe along with infrastructure engineer Jared

I worked across 2 teams to architect, build, deploy and document products using tools such as ARM Templates, Azure Pipelines YAML, Azure CLI, Powershell, .NET, Azure cloud and On-prem infrastructure

This was my first deep dive into cloud infrastructure and infrastructure as code (IAC)

I worked with resources such as Storage accounts, SQL databases, cosmos DB, Data Lake Services, Synapse, App services, Function apps and more networking

My first IAC experience was ARM templates.. how fun (brackets, brackets ,brackets)

Here I really accelerated my devops career, again with my analytical mind I was able to identify inefficiencies like I did in previous roles, where human resource was being used where not required and automation could replace.

Giving that valuable time back to engineers

Reflection

This role wasn’t just my first taste of DevOps — it was where I accelerated. It gave me the tools, mindset, and confidence to start seeing infrastructure the same way I’d once seen code: something to engineer, automate, and continuously improve
